As the high tide recedes, a pair of African black oystercatchers move out onto the exposed intertidal platforms that are covered in a rich and densely packed variety of prey sources for the oystercatchers.

Apart from feeding on mussels, that are skillfully prized open with the long dagger-like bills, the birds also feed on a variety of other marine invertebrates. It is amazing to watch these charismatic shorebirds carefully avoid the crashing waves that pound the intertidal zone as they feed.
