Reducing the Threat of Poaching to Rhino

Sedated White Rhino by Peter Chadwick African Conservation Photographer

A partially sedated White Rhino bull stands with his eyes covered and ears plugged for protection before he will be dehorned to reduce the risk of poachers targeting him for his horns. Since 2008, South Africa has lost over 7000 rhinos due to poaching and the end of this senseless slaughter seems no closer to being reached.

Conservationists have and continue to commit extensive resources at vast expense to protecting the rhino at ground level but ultimately total demand reduction will be needed to stop the killing.
